Clopidogrel is a prodrug that is converted to its active metabolite via two sequential oxidative steps.{32041} The first step leads to formation of 2-oxo clopidogrel, followed by conversion to the active metabolite, which binds specifically and irreversibly to the platelet P2Y12 purinergic receptor, inhibiting ADP-mediated platelet activation and aggregation.{32041}
