Papaverine is an opium alkaloid that is structurally and pharmacologically distinct from opiates. At the cellular level, papaverine inhibits phosphodiesterase activity (IC50 = 13 μM).{16575} Through this action, it increases cellular cAMP levels and alters cellular function.
