Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), displaying a marked preference for the serotonin transporter (Kd = 0.81 nM) over the norepinephrine transporter (Kd = 240 nM) and the dopamine transporter (Kd = 3,600 nM).{22877} Fluoxetine is effective in animal models of depressive-like behavior.{39404} It reverses depressive-like behavior induced by unpredictable chronic mild stress in wild-type mice and cyclin D2 knockout mice, which lack adult neurogenesis.{39405} Formulations containing fluoxetine have been used in the treatment of major depression as well as other psychiatric disorders.{22875,22876}
