Pristanic acid is a saturated 19-carbon branched-chain fatty acid that has been found in human plasma.{28843} It can be formed from phytanic acid (Item No. 90360) via α-oxidation or obtained from dietary sources.{28842} Pristanic acid activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) in cell-based transactivation assays with a median EC50 value of 40 μM.{28843} Elevated levels of pristanic acid have been found in the plasma of patients with peroxisome biogenesis defects.{28842}
